- A (mediocre) solution to Police Quest (updated 2/1/90).
- The manual is required for various procedures and the map of Lytton.
-
- This game is probably Sierra's worst in terms of faults in the
- program. You may achieve more enjoyment finding and listing them
- than in actually playing the game. One example is ordering a person
- to "stop" when they approach you after leaving their vehicle. (This
- will happen during the game) You will receive 2 points EVERY TIME
- you issue this command. You will be able to build your score up to
- 256 at which time it will reset to zero. Happy fault hunting!

- A rather annoying aspect is the fact that you have to issue certain
- instructions at EXACTLY the correct time to receive full points eg.
- If you "search Simms" in the park you will receive (1) point. If
- you do this after returning to your vehicle, you receive (6) points.
- If you then "use radio" after getting into your car, you receive
- nothing. If you press F4 and then "use radio", you will receive (1)
- point.

- Walk East through the door near the bottom of the screen. Walk to
- pigeon holes and "look in hole". This should be done for all holes
- as two of them are worth a point each (2) if you start with one
- other than your own. (Yours is worth the two points if you find it
- first.) "Look on table" then "take paper" (5). Scan paper using
- cursor keys and "take notes" (1). Any notes will do. "Close paper"
- then stand behind left side of front right desk and await the entry
- of Dooley and the other officers (4).

- Wait for the end of the briefing (4) then exit to the West. Walk
- East through the door near the bottom of the screen. Stand in front
- of locker (bottom right). "Open locker" (1) then "look in locker".
- "Take case" (1), "take gun" (1), "take ammo" (1), "load gun" (4),
- [Note that you need only load gun once in the game. Having done so,
- it doesn't matter that you have to take gun AND ammo from your
- locker - the gun is regarded by the game as still being loaded.]
- "Open case" and "look in case". "Take pen", "take notebook" and
- "take book". There are (4) points for these items. "Close case"
- and "close locker".

- Exit West then "look at wall". "Take keys" (1) from the Western
- wall. "Look at table" then "take extender" (2). You can go North
- and use the computer but I didn't get any points for this. Exit
- station by moving W, W.

- Move to front left car and circle it (5). This Safety Check must be
- completed each time you enter an official vehicle at the station or
- you will get a flat tire. "Open door", F4 then "close door". NOTE
- : This sequence is used to enter & exit your vehicle throughout the
- game. Once in the vehicle, F4 will toggle between maps (which allow
- you to drive around) and a 'ready to exit vehicle' state. "Look
- around" then "take nightstick" (3). [The nightstick is also known
- as a PR24.] F4 then drive around (using cursor arrows) until you
- are called to the Southwest corner of Fig & 4th.

- Go to Fig & 4th, park the car, F4 (3), get out of vehicle and
- approach smashed vehicle. "Look in car" then "examine driver". Go
- to the bystanders and "talk to people" then "talk to man". "Use
- radio" then await the arrival of Dooley (5). Re-enter your vehicle
- and drive around until Steve calls.

- Park at Carol's Cafe (3) and enter. "Sit" at left hand table and
- wait for Carol to deliver coffee. "Drink coffee" and wait for phone
- to ring. When Carol gives message, "stand" and "answer phone" (2).
- After the call you can leave.

- Drive around until you see a car go through a red light. Follow car
- closely until it stops. F4 (4) and "use radio" (1). Approach the
- vehicle and "look at driver". When she talks to you, "ask for
- license" then "write ticket". "Return license" then "ask her to
- sign ticket". When she returns the ticket book, "give ticket" (5)
- to the girl.

- NOTE : Don't make the mistake of answering "yes" when the girl asks
- if there is anything she can do for you.

- Drive around until you receive a call about bikies at Carol's Cafe.
- Go to the Cafe and enter. "Talk to Carol" (3) then exit and go next
- door into the bar. Approach the leader and say "move bikes".
-
- "Use PR24" (5) before they have time to take action. "Look at girl"
- then "talk to girl". Leave and drive around until you see a car
- being driven erratically.

- Follow the drunk closely until he stops. F4 (3), "use radio" (1)
- and approach vehicle. "Smell driver" then order him to "get out".
- "Administer FST" (Field Sobriety Test) (3) then "handcuff prisoner"
- and answer "no" to his question about the handcuffs. "Search
- prisoner", "read rights" to him and then say "follow me" (3). Go
- back to your vehicle and "open door" (the rear one). When prisoner
- enters, "close door" then re-enter your vehicle.

- Drive to jail and exit vehicle. "Open door" (at rear). When
- prisoner is out of car, "close door" again. Walk up stairs and
- "look at wall". "Open locker", "put gun in locker" (2) and "close
- locker". NOTE : This 'locker routine' is used a number of times
- throughout the game. Move to right side of door and "press button".
- Move through door when it opens.

- "Book prisoner" for "DUI" (Driving Under the Influence) and "remove
- cuffs" (2) when requested to do so. You will then automatically
- escort your prisoner to the cell. Head East and Laura will enter
- and give you a message. Exit to the East, retrieve your gun from
- the locker and re-enter your vehicle.

- Return to the Station where you must "drop pr24", exit the vehicle
- and enter the station. "Look at table" then "write memo". "Put
- memo in basket" (2) then move East. "Open door" in west wall and
- "look at chicken". Exit to the east and respond "ok" when officers
- ask you to meet them later.

- "Replace keys" and "replace extender", then enter the locker room
- and "open locker". You can then "remove uniform", "close locker",
- move to the shower area, "take shower", "turn shower off" (or F10),
- "open locker" and "take clothes" (2) or you can cheat on the shower
- sequence by "take towel" and "drop towel" for the same score. "Take
- keys" (1) then leave the station and enter your Corvette. "Look
- around" then "take wallet" (3).

- Drive to the Blue Room and F4 (2). After leaving the car, enter
- the door to the North. Move to the right hand chair and "sit".
- Watch the Hoochy Coochy Hanna sequence (2) and wait until a message
- is delivered about a swapped shift. "Stand" and return to the
- Station.

- Go through the locker and shower routines, then enter the briefing
- room. After the briefing (1) look in your pigeon hole (3). Leave
- the room and retrieve the keys and extender. Leave the station and
- circle the police car again. Enter the car and retrieve the PR24.
-
- Drive around. You will receive a message about a light blue
- Cadillac. This may be easy to spot in colour, but I have an amber
- screen which made things rather complicated. If you are alert, you
- may see a vehicle either run a red light or speed excessively. If
- you happen to be driving close behind the correct vehicle, it will
- accelerate away. There are, therefore, a number of ways to
- recognize the vehicle you must chase. The chase itself may be quite
- short or fairly long depending on your dexterity. You must chase
- this vehicle as closely as possible until it pulls over. I found
- the whole thing quite difficult.

- F4 (5) then "use radio". Get out of vehicle after backup has
- arrived. "Draw gun" and order the driver to "get out". He will
- walk towards you so tell him to "stop" (2). Issue the commands
- "hands up" (2) and "lie down" (2). "Put gun in holster" and
- approach man. "Handcuff prisoner" then tell him to "get up".
- "Search prisoner" (2) and "read rights" (1). Move towards your
- vehicle and say "follow me". Put prisoner in car using the same
- method as for the drunk.

- Go to prisoners car and "look in car". "Open compartment" and
- "look". "Take licenses" and "take notebook". "Close book" and
- "close compartment" (4). Return to vehicle and drive to jail. Go
- through the locker routine and enter jail. "Book prisoner" for
- "felony". "Remove cuffs" (3) and escort prisoner to cell. As you
- attempt to leave the jail, you will receive another message.

- Return to the Station (remembering the locker routine at the jail).
- Enter the station (remembering to drop the PR24) and head for the
- office where the chicken was located. Replace the keys and extender
- on the way. Enter the office and approach the desk. When the
- captain leaves, walk behind the desk and "read memo" (2)
-
- Go to the locker room and go through the locker and shower routines
- again (remembering to load your gun). Leave the locker room and
- "take extender". Go West and face the left hand door. "Open door"
- and enter. Wait for the sequence to finish (1).
-
- Leave and enter the right hand office. When Laura leaves, "open
- drawer" of filing cabinet and "take hoffman file" which you can then
- read. "Close drawer" (2), walk to the west wall and "take keys" (3)
- then "take clipboard". Use cursor keys to flip pages then "take
- poster" (2). "Replace clipboard" then leave station.

- Perform safety check of unmarked car (left rear) ie. walk around it
- insofar as you can, then enter the car in the usual manner. Drive
- to the Court House and F4 (1). "Open door" of Court House and go to
- counter. When the clerk approaches, attempt to "get warrant" and
- answer "emergency" (3). When clerk returns, "open door" to the
- North.

- Answer "hoffman" to the judge. "Offer file" then "offer poster".
- Answer "tattoo" (7) when asked. When you receive the no bail
- warrant, drive to the jail and endure the locker routine once more.
- Enter the jail and "give warrant to jailer" (2). Return to the
- station (remembering your gun).

- Laura will meet you. Drive to the park. F4 (1) and alight from
- vehicle. "Talk to Laura" then head North into the park. Hide
- behind bush at right rear of scene. Wait for the drug deal to take
- place ie. the actual exchange, then "use radio". As soon as the
- argument starts, "draw gun" and say "stop" (5). Approach prisoner
- and "put gun in holster". "Handcuff prisoner" (1), then "read
- rights" (1). Say "follow me" and exit the park to the South.

- Go to car then "question prisoner" twice (2). "Search Simms" and
- Laura will do the same (6). "Open door" at rear and deposit your
- prisoner in the car. Get into your car and F4. "Use radio" (1)
- then drive to jail. Hold back your nausea as you go through the
- jail routine once again (booking the men for NARCOTICS) - yes, you
- will get another (2) points for removing the cuffs at the proper
- time. Return to the Station where Laura will send you off to the
- Blue Room once more.

- When you arrive, "sit" and "talk to jack". Wait until message about
- Taselli is delivered (1). Return to Station, enter station and
- enter the left hand office. Wait until sequence is finished (1) and
- leave. Enter the right hand office. "Look in tray" on your desk
- and "read note" (2)

- Leave the office and go to barred window to the East. Get
- "notebook", use cursor keys then "close notebook". Go back to your
- office and listen to Laura. Go to Morgan's office and listen to
- him. Head for the jail once more (remembering the vehicle safety
- check). Enter the jail (leaving your gun in the locker) and watch
- the ensuing sequence. Say "help with operation" (5).

- Leave (remembering your gun) and enter the car. "Use radio" and in
- response or shortly after, you will be directed to Cotton Cove (2).
- Drive there and go to body. "Look at body", "move blanket" then
- "move shirt" (2). "Use radio" (3) then "replace blanket". Go back
- to Morgan's office and listen (2).

- Head for the locker room replacing the extender on the way. Do the
- locker thing again and take a shower. While in the shower, "use
- bleach" then "rinse hair" (3). F10, "open locker", "take clothes",
- "close locker" then exit West. Go to Morgan's office and listen
- (1). Move behind the desk and "look at phone" (2) to get Morgan's
- number.

- Drive to the hotel (1) after the necessary car routine. Enter the
- hotel, walk to the counter and "ring". "Get room" and "pay clerk"
- (3). Go West to bar and order "whiskey". "Pay bartender" when he
- brings the drinks. Wait for your change and an introduction. After
- the bartender has returned to the bar, "stand" and approach bar.
- "Give money" (3) to bartender as a bribe then exit East.

- Walk into elevator and "look around". "Press two" and go East after
- elevator arrives at second floor. "Unlock door" (1) to room 204 and
- answer "yes" to both Marie's questions. Go to phone and "use
- phone". Ring "5556674" and say "Sonny" (3). "Use phone" again and
- dial "0". "Use phone" again and dial "411". Answer "cab" then "use
- phone" to dial "5559222". Answer "hotel" (3). "Use phone" again
- and dial "411". Answer "Cobb" then "use phone" again to dial
- "5552622" (3) so you can pass on condolances to Jack Cobb.

- Return to the bar. "Show money" (1) to bartender then follow to the
- West. Go to bartender to be frisked then enter room to North and
- "sit". Wait for Frank's entry. You must now play poker and win (3)
- [Enter deal at the end of each hand to start the next].

- After you have won, return to your room and wait for arrival of
- detectives. Go to the man on the left and "get transmitter" (5).
- Go back to the bar and say "frank sent me". Follow bartender, get
- frisked, and "sit" once more. Play poker again (3). Answer "yes"
- to both Frank's questions, "stand" then follow him to the East.

- When in the stairwell, "use transmitter" and follow him up the
- stairs. When he enters the room, "use transmitter" (5) again.
- Enter the room and await the completion of the finishing sequence.
- You get another (4) points just before you are declared a hero.

- This is about my worst effort to date (which is certainly in keeping
- with Sierra's worst game). I managed 225 of a possible 245. I
- don't care very much that I didn't do better. I rushed through this
- "solution" as I found the documenting even more tedious than the
- game (which is saying something!). I may have left bits out or got
- Easts swapped with Wests (as I have a tendency to do). If so, I
- apologize.

- Sierra, Shakespeare said it all with "Much Ado about Nothing". I
- shouldn't condemn you for one lemon but "Come on fellas (and girls);
- you can do much better!" This game is a shocker!
